Abstract
One of the important issues in the world today is climate change. Human activities and natural factors mainly cause these changes. The main factor that triggers this phenomenon is the need for more public knowledge in dealing with and anticipating the impacts of climate change. Therefore, this research analyzed the comparative knowledge and perceptions of coastal communities regarding climate change in East Java. Purposive sampling and snowball methods were used to select 110 respondents to complete the survey form. 50 respondents were taken from residents on the Sendang Biru coast, South Malang Regency, and 60 were taken from residents on the Tuban coast, East Java Province, Indonesia. To analyze the comparative knowledge of the two regions, Manova inferential statistical tests and quantitative descriptive statistics using percentages were used. According to the research results, there is no significant difference between the two regions regarding knowledge about climate change. Public knowledge is also high, as shown by the average value for each item, which is close to 5.0. High awareness of climate change will make people who mostly make their living as fishermen and farmers better adapt by appreciating, protecting, and conserving natural resources, which are very important for their well-being. Even though the two regions are not significantly different, in terms of awareness, the Tuban region is higher than that of South Malang. This higher level of awareness is supported by the level of accessibility in the Tuban area, which is relatively flat so that access to education and information on climate change mitigation and adaptation is more effective.
