Abstract
Sugarcane is one of the important commodities in the industry where bagasse fiber as waste is abundantly available. Sugarcane bagasse fiber has high cellulose, a key element in the utilization of bagasse. Chemical pretreatment is important to prepare the natural fiber before used as composite reinforcement. The purpose of the study is to analyze the thermal degradation of bagasse fiber after being treated using NaOH and TEMPO solution. The manufacturing method was carried out by a series of washing bagasse with distilled water and NaOH solution, subsequently soaking it in 6% NaOH and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-l-oxyl (TEMPO) solution, and conducted oven-dried. Thermogravimetric analysis was conducted with a heating rate of 10°C/minute at 25°C to 800°C. The results showed that the degradation of bagasse fiber consisted of 3 stages. In the first stage of 6% NaOH treatment, the mass reduction was only 7.6%, and TEMPO was 8.3%. In the second stage of 6% NaOH treatment, mass reduction peaked at 322°C with a mass loss of 8.2%/min and TEMPO at 339°C at 9.6%/min. In the third stage, the mass loss seemed similar in both treatments up to 800°C. Sugarcane bagasse fiber treated with 6% NaOH solution is more heat resistant by 2.1% than TEMPO solution.
