Abstract
The low level of basic literacy at the elementary school level requires intervention with innovative and interactive learning methods. This study aims to improve the reading skills of third grade students at SDN 40 Sungai Raya through the application of the paired reading method. The type of research used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with the Kemmis and McTaggart model which was implemented in three cycles. The research subjects consisted of 20 students. Data collection instruments included a reading aloud test (focusing on accuracy, speed, and intonation) and a reading comprehension test. The results showed a significant increase in each cycle. The average student score increased gradually from 57.00 (Precycle) to 81.00 (Cycle III). Classical learning completion also increased from 35% to 80% , meeting the established success indicators. In addition, student activity during the learning process reached the very good category (87%). Peer tutor interaction in this method has proven effective in reducing students' psychological barriers when reading. The conclusion of this study is that the paired reading method significantly improves students' early reading literacy and text comprehension. Recommendations for practitioners are the need for a variety of reading texts and intensive assistance when forming heterogeneous pairs.
