Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the reasoning of junior high school students in solving problems around and around the square. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research approach. The subjects in this study were 3 VII grade students of Malang SMPN 2. Subject selection was based on students' mathematical abilities consisting of high, low and medium students. Students' mathematical abilities are seen from the grades of the previous math report cards and are based on recommendations from class teachers. The instruments used in this study are reasoning test logic questions and interview guidelines. The results of the study illustrate that high category students are able to do all the components of analogical reasoning both in encoding, inferring, mapping and applying well. The category students are likely to experience barriers to analogy reasoning in the mapping and applying components. Low category students experience obstacles in all components of analogy reasoning both in encoding, inferring, mapping and applying.
