Abstract

This study is a classroom action research which aim to describe the phases of van Hiele learning aided by manipulative that can improve seventh grade student’s conceptual understanding of quadrilateral in SMP Negeri 2 Sampit. The study was conducted in two cycles with the result of the study showed an improving student’s conceptual understanding of quadrilateral in each cycle. The phases of van Hiele learning are (1) information: through doing answer and question, the researcher checked the previous materials, the research provided informations about the purpose of the learning by powerpoint, (2) guided orientation: the researcher asked students to disscuss with their groups to solve the worksheet, in this activity, the students used manipulative media to understand the concept, (3) explicitation: the teacher asked students to describe the reason in solving the problems in the worksheet, (4) free orientation: the research given the the complex problems in the worksheet according the materials, (5) integration: the teacher provided opportunities for students to present their result of discussion and make conclusion.
