Abstract
Higher education is an important factor in development in Indonesia. Higher education makes a real contribution to national development in order to improve the progress and welfare of society, if higher education able to produce skilled human resources, it will be able to meet the needs of the community or can be a solution to the real problems faced by the community. The aim of this study is to build a framework through subjective interpretation of the academic performance of students in the first year Prodi Guidance and Counseling FKIP University PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya, and implement academic performance to achieve academic success. The researchers used a phenomenological approach. The study participants were 10 first year students of Guidance and Counseling Program of FKIP University of PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya TA. 2016-2017. Sampling is done purposively, data collection through observation and interview, data analysis using data reduction method. The result of the research shows that there is a meaning of multi-dimensional academic performance, not merely achievement in the form of value / GPA, but also contained personal competence and social competence. The implications for achieving high academic performance are not enough to hone intellectual or analytical skills, but also personal competencies such as motivation, effort, self-regulation that will shape individual habits and personalities in addition to the need for support and empowerment from others.
