Abstract

The purposes of this study were to know (1) focus on society motive in doing the physical activities of mountaineering, (2) to identify the gotten benefit of the physical activities of mountaineering for climbers, and (3) to identify risks and dangers of the physical activities of mountaineering. The study was conducted in the Mount Merbabu National Park, Boyolali Regency, Central Java Province. It was a qualitative research by using phenomenological approach, research objectives phenomenology was to comprehend a phenomenon about what happened to the research subject. The results of the study could be concluded as follows, first, society motive of doing the physical activities of mountaineering were taken touch or saturation off due to their routine and personal problem wanted to be unity with the nature and enjoyed of natural scenery, tried to get something new and get a new experience, interact with nature, and explored as a hobby. Second, benefits for physical activities of mountaineering to climber (a) benefits for physically: as a sport, maintenance health of the body, physical training, and helpful to lose weight, (b) benefits for psychology: revitalizing the mind or refreshing, relaxation and recreation, character building, getting pleasure or satisfaction, learning to live independently, and getting a new experience, (c) benefits for socially: adding friends and as a means of socializing, (d) benefits for spiritually is closer to God. Third, risks and dangers of the physical activities of mountaineering were caused by two factors, (a) the internal factor (climbers), included the planning and preparation were less, exhaustion, fell, and stray, (b) external factors (natural conditions), included of climate or weather, mountain sickness as hypothermia and hypoxia, and wild animals.
