Abstract

This research aims to describe students’ achievement in solving word problem based on the students’ ability to make multiple representations. This research conducted by give two word problems to 29 students in XII SMA. In each problem, students asked to make visual and symbolic representation which is represents the story given, and then solve the problem with the procedure to solve it as detail as possible. The research result shows that (1) students’ ability to make a symbolic representation is better than the students’ ability to make a visual representation, (2) the students’ inability to make a visual representation doesn’t effect the achievement in problem solving, (3) the students whom can’t make a symbolic representation which is compatible with the problem given tend to unable to make a visual representation which is represents the problem and use try and error strategy to solve the problem.
