Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) the choice of vocabulary that is often used to describe women and (2) the position of women in society. The method used in this research is Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. The data of this research are words, phrases, sentences, and pictures/illustrations that show the image of women. While the data sources are six high school level Indonesian language textbooks sourced from two publishers, Kementrian Kebudayaan dan Pendidikan and Penerbit Erlangga. Data were analyzed using critical reading. The results show that (1a) weak physical, psychological, and social images of women (1b) passivization and nominalization of women, (1c) women's work variety, (2a) women as a means to achieve goals, and (2b) hierarchical relationships between women and men.
