Abstract

This study aims to examine the visual development of the Waru motif in Batik Tulis Namiroh Sidoarjo over time, identify the factors influencing these changes, and analyze the visual elements of batik that indicate such development. The visual development of the motif was analyzed chronologically based on different time periods by examining changes in form, color, and composition from the perspective of visual aesthetics. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with an art and cultural approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation and analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Waru motif has undergone significant visual development, evolving from complex forms to simpler ones, from traditional colors to brighter and more contrasting color schemes, and from dense compositions to more open and dynamic arrangements. These changes were influenced by market demand, custom orders, and changing times. Visual elements, including form, color, and composition, served as the primary indicators of this development. Therefore, the Waru motif reflects an adaptive process between traditional values and modern needs while maintaining its local identity.
