Abstract

Lengger Lanang, a traditional performing art from Banyumas, Indonesia, is characterized by the interplay of masculinity and femininity expressed through male dancers. This phenomenon inspired the creation of mixed-media batik artworks using a biomorphic art approach, with butterfly metamorphosis as a visual metaphor. This study aims to conceptualize feminine expression within the masculine bodies of Lengger Lanang dancers as an artistic foundation, describe the creative process, and analyze the visual elements and symbolic meanings of the artworks. The study adopts Alma Hawkins’ three-stage creative model: exploration, improvisation, and formation. The creative process involved cultural observation, sketch development, material experimentation, and artwork production combining hand-drawn batik with wire mesh and aluminum wire. Six artworks were created: Kelahiran Identitas, Penyerapan Energi, Mengurung Dimensi, Terbang Menari, Dominasi, and Sampai Waktuku Tiba. The first four represent artistic transformation through butterfly metamorphosis, while the remaining two reflect social stigma and challenges in preserving Lengger Lanang. This study highlights the potential of mixed-media batik as a medium for artistic expression and sociocultural reflection through visual symbolism, material exploration, and cultural interpretation.
