Abstract

Previous studies on the poetry of Sapardi Djoko Damono have predominantly situated his works within the framework of lyricism, linguistic simplicity, and humanistic reflection, while the dimension of local philosophy as a foundation of existential consciousness has received limited scholarly attention. This article aims to reveal the representation of the concept of sangkan paraning dumadi as a philosophy of life in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s poetry. The concept is understood as an ontological awareness of human existence concerning its origin and ultimate purpose in relation to God. This study employs a philosophical approach using qualitative descriptive analysis of selected poems that represent themes of life, time, transience, and death. The novelty of this research lies in its reading of Sapardi’s poetry as a medium for articulating Javanese philosophy of life within the context of modern Indonesian literature, rather than merely as an expression of individual lyricism. The findings indicate that Sapardi’s poetic symbols construct a subtle and reflective spiritual consciousness, positioning his poetry as a space for existential contemplation that bridges local spirituality and modern sensibilities.
