Abstract

Flipped learning is a teaching strategy that reverses traditional classroom activities by providing learning materials and practice exercises for independent study at home. Classroom time is then used for practical activities, conducted either in groups or individually, based on the material learned in advance. Flipped learning is considered an effective strategy for developing speaking skills in Mandarin language learning. This study aims to describe the classroom activities involved in implementing the flipped learning strategy to develop speaking skills among Mandarin Language Education students of the 2021 cohort at Universitas Negeri Malang, as well as to examine students’ responses to its implementation. This study employed a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. Data were collected through classroom observations conducted by three observers and interviews with 22 Mandarin Language Education students from the 2021 cohort. The findings indicate that the implementation of flipped learning in speaking skills instruction was conducted effectively. Interview results also reveal positive student responses, suggesting that flipped learning helps improve Mandarin speaking skills. Through this strategy, students’ speaking skills can be developed effectively.
