Abstract
Larung Sesaji is one of Indonesia’s cultural traditions found on the island of Java, especially in coastal communities. This ritual is performed by fishermen as an expression of gratitude and a prayer for blessings, prosperity, and safety from God. Each region in Java has its own variation and name for this tradition. In Jember, Larung Sesaji is known as Petik Laut or Sedekah Pancer, which takes place in Puger District. However, in the era of globalization, many traditional practices are gradually being abandoned, leading to concerns about the erosion of local culture. This concern inspired the author to use Larung Sesaji as a source of inspiration in creating surrealist paintings. The purpose of this study is to describe the concept, the creative visualization process, and the presentation of surrealist artworks based on the story behind Larung Sesaji in Jember. The method used in this study is L.H. Chapman’s creative method, which consists of three stages: initiation, refinement, and visualization. The results of this study are six acrylic paintings on canvas entitled “Babat Alas,” “Nyepi,” “Sajen,” “Sendiko Dawuh,” “Mati Salah,” and “Garit Durga.” These artworks represent the narrative behind the Larung Sesaji tradition and convey moral values while promoting awareness of the importance of preserving local culture.
