Abstract
Painting is a form of visual expression that functions as a medium for conveying ideas, emotions, and aesthetic experiences. This artistic creation research aims to visualize the character Blue Wing from Zillah Bethell’s novel The Shark Caller into decorative naïve style paintings. The novel was chosen as the source of inspiration because it presents the theme of a harmonious relationship between humans and the sea through the character of Blue Wing, who possesses a spiritual connection with sharks and the ocean as part of the cultural identity of Papua New Guinea society. The creative process was carried out through several stages, including idea exploration, data collection, concept incubation, inspiration, and visual development. The visualization of the character and marine environment was realized through the deformation of forms, the use of bright colors, decorative compositions, and non-realistic approaches that characterize the decorative naïve style. This visual approach emphasizes innocence, freedom of expression, and the child’s perspective that becomes the center of the story. The results of this creative research consist of six paintings that symbolically and imaginatively depict the emotional relationship between humans and the marine environment. This study demonstrates that literary works can serve as a strong source of inspiration in the creation of visual art while simultaneously functioning as a medium for conveying ecological, cultural, and humanitarian messages through communicative visual language.
