Abstract

The batik industry has experienced significant development alongside changes in public perception toward batik products. Printing techniques, which are not officially recognized as traditional batik-making methods, have increasingly expanded in regions known as centers of textile and batik industries. Meanwhile, home-based batik industries face greater challenges as handmade products become less popular than mass-produced batik-patterned textiles. This study aims to examine the aesthetic shifts and technical adaptations employed by batik artisans in sustaining their businesses amid modern industrial competition. This research applies a qualitative approach using comparative study methods. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and literature review. The study focuses on batik artisans in Tulungagung, Madura, Sidoarjo, and Banyuwangi, regions selected because of their strong historical traditions of batik production in East Java. The findings reveal that batik artisans implement various strategies, including modifying traditional batik aesthetics, combining traditional and modern techniques, developing printing methods integrated with traditional batik processes, and utilizing exhibitions, bazaars, marketplaces, and social media as promotional and marketing platforms. Each region demonstrates different forms of resilience and marketing strategies in responding to industrial changes and shifting market preferences.
