Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of formal education in the German-language series Biohackers and to explain how the characters' decision-making contributes to plot development. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis. The data consisted of dialogues, scenes, actions, and situations related to the characters' academic backgrounds and decision-making in Biohackers Season 1, Episode 3. Data were collected through documentation and non-participant observation by repeatedly watching the selected episode. Data analysis followed six stages of content analysis: unitizing, sampling, recording, reducing, inferring, and narrating. The findings reveal that formal education is represented through the characters' academic disciplines, academic competence, positions within the higher education system, and hierarchical relationships. Differences in educational backgrounds and academic roles influence the considerations underlying the characters' decisions. These decisions are shaped not only by academic knowledge but also by power relations, personal interests, social pressures, and ethical dilemmas. Furthermore, the characters' decisions contribute significantly to the development of conflicts and plot progression. The findings indicate that formal education in Biohackers functions not merely as a narrative setting but also as a key element in shaping character development, decision-making processes, and story dynamics. This study contributes to German-language film studies by enriching discussions on the representation of higher education and decision-making in audiovisual media.
