Abstract

This study aims to describe students' perceptions of using TikTok videos as a medium for independent Mandarin vocabulary learning, including the types of accounts used, the benefits obtained, and the challenges encountered. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 27 students from the 2023 cohort of the Undergraduate Mandarin Language Education Program at Universitas Negeri Malang. Data were collected through semi-structured questionnaires and analysed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students generally hold positive perceptions of TikTok as a medium for Mandarin vocabulary learning. The platform is considered engaging, accessible, flexible, and capable of enhancing learning motivation through contextual audiovisual content. Various TikTok accounts help students expand their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, develop listening and speaking skills, and understand vocabulary use in everyday communication. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, including limited depth of content, the need to verify content accuracy, limited interaction with content creators, unstable internet connections, and distractions caused by entertainment content. These findings suggest that TikTok has the potential to serve as a supplementary medium for independent Mandarin vocabulary learning. However, its use should be selective and complemented by more credible and structured learning resources.
