Abstract

Kembang setaman is a traditional floral arrangement used in various Javanese cultural practices and carries symbolic meanings associated with human life. This research and artistic creation aims to reinterpret the symbolism of kembang setaman through contemporary painting and explore its potential as a source of visual ideas for representing the human life journey. The creative process adapted Alma M. Hawkins’ method, comprising exploration, improvisation, and realization. Exploration involved literature and visual studies as well as reflection on personal experience; improvisation involved sketch development and artistic experimentation; and realization employed acrylic paint on canvas. The process resulted in six paintings representing siraman, tedak siten, marriage, jamasan of heirlooms, village cleansing rituals, and death. Together, the works construct a visual narrative of the human life journey, with kembang setaman serving as a unifying element whose meaning shifts across the individual works. The results demonstrate that traditional cultural symbols can be reinterpreted through contemporary visual language while maintaining their connection to the cultural contexts from which they originate. The works were subsequently presented in a three-day exhibition in Tulungagung as part of the process of public communication and appreciation.
