Abstract
The low listening skill ability of the students at Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang is a challenge because it is often making them failing to obtain an English competency certificate as a requirement for a proposal seminar. This research aims to develop an interactive eBook to help the students improve their listening skills by focusing on 2 things, doing needs analysis and designing eBook listening prototype. This research uses the research and development (R&D) design. There are 9 English lecturers and 40 students as participants which taken purpossively. The instrument used is a survey and analyzed qualitatively. The results show that not only students (62.5%) but also lecturers (56%) often experience challenges using the conventional eBook because of the lack of suitability of the material with the needs of students and the existing curriculum. There are 78% lecturers and 70% students want eBooks that are equipped with multimedia. There are 89% lecturers and 80% students want if the material in the eBook is relevant with the students’ real life. Likewise, there are 78% lecturers and 70% students like attractive designs. Thus, it can be concluded that the development of interactive eBooks specifically for improving students’ listening skill in Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang is indeed an urgent and thus this study presents the basic listening interactive eBook prototype.
