Abstract

The main focus of this research aims to find out: 1) principals' views on teacher leadership; 2) principals' views on the urgency of teacher leadership development; and 3) the extent of teacher leadership development that has been carried out by principals. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Qualitative data were obtained from 8 principals at the primary school level in Sleman Regency whose schools have teachers who are graduates and non-graduates of the teacher leadership education program. The method used was semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data analysis used a thematic analysis model to analyze the principals' views. This study resulted in three main findings, namely: (1) principals' views on teacher leadership, namely teacher leadership as broad leadership and the ability to influence others. (2) the urgency of developing teacher leadership according to principals has a high urgency in improving school quality and improving teacher quality; and (3) efforts to develop teacher leadership made by principals include holding leadership development programs, facilitating physical and non-physical, empowering teachers, and involving teachers in managerial tasks.
