Abstract
This qualitative study with the ethnographic design of communication aims to clarify the manifestations of phatic language in social interaction in Pesantren. Ethnographic communication research emphasizes the existence of culture, language and other factors in the community. The data of this study is a speech containing a vivid language of social interaction in an Islamic boarding school. Speech data containing fat language were then transcribed using written text with contextual explanations. The data of this study were taken from July 12, 2019 to December 20, 2019. The source of this research was 16 female students, 3 religious teachers and 2 religious teachers at Al Irtiqo Islamic boarding school in Malang. The results of the study found forty-nine data related to the three unity language focus, namely (1) form, (2) function, and (3) form and function strategy.
