Abstract
The conventional teacher-centered approach in thematic instruction frequently induces student passivity and limits cognitive achievement, particularly on abstract subject matter. This study aimed to examine and analyze the effect of applying the “Dua Kawan” (an interactive board-and-dice) learning media on the cognitive learning outcomes of fifth-grade students in thematic learning at the state elementary schools of Salamrejo Village, Karangan District, Trenggalek Regency. Employing a quasi-experimental approach with a non-equivalent control group design, the study involved 43 students selected through saturated sampling, comprising 24 students in the experimental class and 19 students in the control class. Cognitive learning outcome data were collected using a validated multiple-choice test and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS version 25.0. The test instrument proved highly feasible: 21 of 25 items were declared valid through Product Moment correlation, and the instrument demonstrated high internal consistency with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.892. After six instructional sessions, the experimental class attained a higher mean posttest score (82.70) than the control class (79.50). The Independent Samples T-Test was used to test the hypothesis. In conclusion, the “Dua Kawan” media offers a practical, low-cost, and non-digital alternative for enhancing conceptual understanding and reducing academic boredom in elementary thematic learning.
