Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe forms of compliance with and violations of politeness principles in netizens’ responses to the issue of salary increases for members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) on the TikTok account @kompastv.indonesia. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through digital documentation of netizens’ comments related to the issue. The data were selected purposively and analyzed using Leech’s politeness principles by considering both the linguistic forms and pragmatic contexts of the comments. The findings reveal that violations of politeness principles were more frequently identified than compliance within the analyzed corpus. Violations were primarily associated with the sympathy and tact maxims, while compliance was identified in the tact, sympathy, and approbation maxims. The comments also demonstrate that criticism in digital communication may be expressed through direct evaluations, irony, and sarcasm, making contextual interpretation essential for determining the pragmatic function of an utterance. These findings highlight the relevance of politeness principles in understanding netizens’ communication patterns and the importance of contextual awareness, empathy, and responsible language use when expressing opinions in digital public spaces.
