Abstract

Learning in the Cultural Arts subject, particularly traditional music at SMA Negeri 1 Wates, still faces a gap caused by the use of unsuitable media. This condition has contributed to low student achievement, with many students failing to meet the minimum passing criterion of 75. This research and development study aimed to produce VALIT media—an animated video about traditional music ensembles—using Powtoon as a learning resource to improve student outcomes. The study followed R&D stages comprising identification of potential and problems, data collection, product design and planning, expert validation in content, media, and language, small-group trials, revision, second-stage validation, large-group trials, and final refinement. VALIT consists of five scenes: a cover, an introduction, material on forms of traditional music performance, the functions of traditional music, and a closing section. Validation results showed that VALIT was highly feasible: the second-stage validation scores were 96.8% from the content expert, 93.7% from the language expert, and 100% from the media expert. Learning with VALIT also improved students’ analytical abilities, as the proportion of students meeting the passing criterion increased from 24% on the pretest to 97% on the posttest.
