Abstract

Low student motivation is a major challenge in education today, particularly in mathematics. One solution is to use gamification-based instructional media such as Nearpod. The application offers interactive features, including quizzes, polls, simulations, and dynamic presentations, which can create an enjoyable and engaging learning environment. This study employed a qualitative approach to explore the benefits of using Nearpod in mathematics instruction. The participants were 32 students in Grade VIII-H at SMPN 18 Malang. Data were collected through open-ended surveys and observations of student activities during lessons. The findings showed that Nearpod improved students’ understanding of triangles and quadrilaterals, created a less monotonous learning atmosphere, and encouraged students to become more focused, active, and motivated. Nearpod also facilitated the development of critical-thinking and collaborative skills while broadening students’ knowledge and encouraging healthy competition. The study concludes that Nearpod is an effective gamification-based learning medium that can improve both the quality of instruction and student motivation, and it recommends its use in modern classroom practice.
