Abstract

A Grade VIII Social Studies teacher at SMPN 2 Malang implemented a Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach based on the local culture of Greater Malang to strengthen the global diversity dimension of the Pancasila Student Profile. This study aimed to: (1) examine the implementation of CRT in Social Studies learning and (2) identify opportunities and challenges in its application. A qualitative descriptive method was used with Grade VIII-F students at SMPN 2 Malang as participants. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The Miles and Huberman model was used for data analysis, while data validity was examined through time and method triangulation. The findings showed that CRT-based Social Studies instruction was implemented smoothly and created a conducive classroom environment. Three major opportunities were identified: the cultural diversity of Greater Malang that could be explored, adequate school facilities and infrastructure, and teachers’ flexibility in designing instruction according to students’ sociocultural backgrounds. Challenges included the need for appropriate instructional strategies and efficient time management.
