Abstract

One of the main challenges in junior high school Social Studies is low student motivation. Many students perceive the subject as heavily based on memorization, making it feel monotonous and less engaging. To address this problem, the study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of Kahoot! as an instructional medium for increasing student motivation in Social Studies at SMP Negeri 13 Malang. A qualitative descriptive approach was used with Grade IX students as participants. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that Kahoot! increased student motivation because its interactive features attracted attention and improved engagement. It also helped students understand the material more easily, develop critical-thinking skills, and receive immediate feedback that strengthened their understanding. Therefore, the implementation of Kahoot! can serve as an innovative alternative for improving the quality of Social Studies learning at the junior high school level.
