Abstract
Social skills are essential for individuals to build harmonious relationships with others. This study examined the effectiveness of individual counseling using positive reinforcement techniques to improve the social skills of Grade X students at SMA Brawijaya Smart School. A quantitative experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design was used. The participants were three Grade X students selected on the basis of a needs assessment and initial observations. Social skills were measured using the Social Skills Rating Scale developed by Gresham and Elliot. Data were collected through pretests and posttests to identify changes after the counseling intervention. Descriptive analysis showed increases in social-skill scores for all three participants after treatment. In addition, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test produced an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, below 0.05, indicating that individual counseling with positive reinforcement was significantly effective in improving students’ social skills. This approach may therefore serve as an effective intervention strategy for helping students develop stronger social abilities.
