Abstract

Visual arts learning at SMPN 10 Malang still faces limitations in instructional media that support students’ understanding and active participation. This study aimed to analyze learning needs, develop and validate a visual composition board game puzzle, and examine its effectiveness in improving students’ knowledge and learning engagement. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Data were collected through observations, interviews, expert validation questionnaires, knowledge tests, and observations of students’ learning engagement. The needs analysis indicated a demand for more engaging and interactive media for learning the elements and principles of art. Material expert validation yielded a score of 98.75%, while media expert validation reached 97.50%, both categorized as highly feasible. Among Grade VIII-C students, the mean knowledge score increased from 63.2 on the pretest to 81.2 on the posttest, with an N-Gain of 0.47 (moderate). Learning engagement increased from 65.40% to 78%, with an N-Gain of 0.35 (moderate). These findings indicate that the visual composition board game puzzle is feasible and has potential to support students’ knowledge and engagement in visual arts learning.
