Abstract

Scientific literacy and critical thinking skills are two fundamental competencies that students need in the 21st century. Scientific literacy is essential for students to understand and use scientific knowledge to make informed decisions, while critical thinking trains students to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and solve problems logically. Therefore, the intent of this study was to determine the effect of the guided inquiry learning model assisted by crossword puzzle media on students’ scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. The type of research used was quasi-experimental with a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of two classes: class VII-8 as the control group and class VII-9 as the experimental group. The instruments used were a scientific literacy test in the form of 22 multiple-choice questions that had been validated and a critical thinking test consisting of 5 validated essay questions. The results of data analysis indicated that the guided inquiry learning model assisted by crossword puzzle media had a significant effect on students’ scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. It can be concluded that the application of the guided inquiry-based learning model regarding classification of living things had a positive impact. Based on the N-Gain test, there was a significant improvement in students’ scientific literacy in the experimental class of 64% (medium), while critical thinking skills improved in the experimental class of 57% (medium).
