Open Access Policy

The journal provides immediate open access to its published articles. Readers may read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, subject to appropriate attribution.

Who Can Submit?

Anyone may submit original work for consideration provided that the author holds the relevant copyright or has authorization from the copyright holder(s) to submit the manuscript.

General Submission Rules

Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published or be under consideration by another journal or publisher. Publication in a working-paper series does not, by itself, constitute prior journal publication. By submitting, authors agree not to submit the same manuscript elsewhere until the journal has completed its editorial decision process. Questions may be addressed to the editorial office.

Formatting Requirements

The journal does not require a mandatory article template. Authors should submit a clear, editable manuscript that follows the journal’s editorial requirements. The main text should use Century Schoolbook, 11 pt, and citations and references should follow APA 7th Edition. Manuscripts must be written in English. Final typesetting and page layout are handled by the Digital Commons production team.

Publication Frequency and Important Dates

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya (JBS) was published twice a year, in February and August, through 2026.

Starting from Year 55 (2027), the journal will increase its publication frequency to three issues per year, scheduled for February, June, and October. This change is intended to accommodate the growing volume of scholarly submissions and provide more opportunities for the timely dissemination of research in language, literature, arts, and education.

Manuscripts may be submitted throughout the year. The average time from submission to the first editorial decision is approximately four weeks. Manuscripts undergoing external peer review may require two to three months or longer for subsequent decisions, depending on reviewer availability, revision rounds, and editorial evaluation. Submission or completion of peer review does not guarantee acceptance or publication.

Copyright Notice and License

Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication. Authors may deposit both submitted and published versions in open-access repositories, provided that the original publication is appropriately acknowledged.

Plagiarism Policy

Forms of plagiarism

• Unattributed copying or close paraphrasing of text, ideas, data, or images.
• Redundant publication, inappropriate text recycling, and presenting others’ research as original work.

Screening and maximum similarity

JBS checks submitted manuscripts for text similarity and potential plagiarism. The maximum permitted similarity score is 20%. Manuscripts exceeding this threshold may be returned for revision or rejected. A score of 20% or less does not automatically establish originality: editors also examine uncited overlap, duplicate publication, self-plagiarism, and the location and nature of matched passages.

Plagiarism, fabrication of citations, and unattributed reuse of text, ideas, data, or images are unacceptable and may result in rejection, correction, or retraction in accordance with publication-ethics procedures.

Policy on AI and AI-Assisted Tools

JBS follows the principles of Elsevier’s Generative AI Policies for Journals. Authors may use generative AI and AI-assisted technologies to support literature exploration, manuscript organization, and language clarity, but these tools must not replace independent scholarly judgment, original intellectual contribution, or human accountability. Authors must verify the accuracy of all AI-assisted output, references, and claims and protect confidential data and intellectual property.

Declaration of AI use

Authors must disclose substantive use of generative AI during manuscript preparation in a separate statement before the References, identifying the tool and purpose and confirming human review. Basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation checks do not require disclosure. Substantive restructuring, translation, or AI-assisted drafting must be declared.

Research methods and visual material

AI used in research design, coding, data collection, analysis, or interpretation must be described transparently and reproducibly in the Methods section. AI-generated explanatory figures, when permitted, require disclosure in the caption and manuscript declaration. AI must not fabricate or alter primary research images or data. AI tools cannot be credited as authors or co-authors.

Editors and reviewers

Unpublished manuscripts and confidential peer-review material must not be uploaded to public AI tools. Any permitted supporting use must preserve confidentiality, be subject to human oversight, and follow the journal’s applicable review and disclosure rules.

Authorship and Changes to Authorship

All listed authors must have made a substantive scholarly contribution, approved the final manuscript, and agreed to submission. The corresponding author must verify the complete author list, author order, affiliations, and contact information before submission.

Before acceptance: Requests to add, remove, or reorder authors are considered only in exceptional circumstances, at the editor’s discretion, with a written explanation and documented agreement from all existing and proposed authors. After acceptance: JBS does not permit routine changes to the author list or order, consistent with Elsevier’s publishing-ethics approach.

After publication and DOI activation: Authors may not add, remove, replace, or reorder authors in the published article. Exceptional allegations of authorship error or misconduct may be examined through a formal publication-ethics investigation; any resulting action, if warranted, will be documented through an appropriate published notice rather than an informal alteration of the article record.

Correction and Retraction Policies

The journal may publish corrections, expressions of concern, or retraction notices, depending on the nature and seriousness of an identified problem, in line with COPE Retraction Guidelines.

Reasons for retraction may include unreliable findings arising from misconduct or honest error, redundant publication without appropriate justification, plagiarism, or unethical research.

Author Fees, Waivers, and Refunds

No automatic APC exemption or waiver is offered, including for articles with authors affiliated with two or more countries. The publication fee applies to accepted manuscripts under the journal’s published fee schedule.

Paid Fast-Track Editorial Processing

Authors may inquire about the availability, applicable fees, and procedures of the optional paid fast-track editorial processing service through the JBS Support Contacts. This service is intended to expedite editorial handling only and does not guarantee manuscript acceptance or publication, nor does it bypass editorial screening, independent peer review, or publication-ethics requirements. Editorial decisions are based on scholarly merit and journal policies, independently of any fast-track payment.

Refund policy

Publication charges paid following acceptance are non-refundable, subject to any applicable legal obligations or correction of billing errors.

Advertising Policy

The journal may accept advertisements relevant to language, literature, arts, education, academic resources, conferences, and scholarly services across its website, newsletters, and related digital channels.

• Relevance: Advertisements must be appropriate to the journal’s readership.
• Accuracy: False, misleading, or offensive content is prohibited.
• Editorial independence: Advertisers cannot influence editorial decisions.
• Transparency: Advertising and sponsored content must be clearly identified.
• Approval: All advertising is subject to editorial approval.
• Fees: Advertising charges, where applicable, are available on request.

Author Rights and Repository Archiving

Authors retain copyright to their articles, grant the journal first-publication rights, and may share or archive submitted and published versions, with proper citation and acknowledgment of the original journal publication. Reuse of published material is governed by the CC BY 4.0 license.

Complaints and Appeals Policy

JBS welcomes substantiated complaints concerning editorial procedures, peer review, publication ethics, and editorial decisions. Authors or other concerned parties may submit a written complaint through the JBS Contact Page, identifying the manuscript or article, the grounds for the complaint, and supporting information.

The Editor-in-Chief or a designated editor will acknowledge and assess the concern, request clarification when needed, and communicate the outcome with an explanation. A request to reconsider an editorial decision should identify a material procedural error, factual misunderstanding, or other specific grounds; disagreement with reviewers alone does not establish grounds for reversal. Where the handling editor has a conflict of interest or is the subject of the complaint, assessment will be assigned to another uninvolved editor or an appropriate institutional authority. Confidentiality and fairness will be maintained, and editorial decisions will not be influenced by payment or personal relationships.

Data Availability and Sharing Policy

Authors should include a Data Availability Statement describing whether the data supporting the findings are publicly accessible, available from a repository, available on reasonable request, or subject to justified restrictions. Where appropriate, authors should provide a persistent repository link or identifier and describe any supplementary materials needed to interpret the results.

JBS encourages responsible sharing of research materials, including anonymized interview transcripts, coding frameworks, survey instruments, datasets, and analytical documentation where legally and ethically permissible. Public release is not required when it would compromise participant privacy, informed consent, confidential agreements, intellectual property, or applicable legal obligations. Authors must explain relevant restrictions and preserve research records in accordance with institutional and ethical requirements. Editors may request supporting information for verification, subject to confidentiality safeguards.

Peer Review and Editorial Independence

JBS uses double-blind peer review. Submissions first undergo editorial screening for scope, originality, completeness, research ethics, and technical suitability. Manuscripts considered suitable are assigned to qualified independent reviewers with relevant expertise. Editors evaluate the reports, may request revisions or additional assessment, and issue an editorial decision based on scholarly merit and the journal’s standards. Acceptance is never automatic following revision.

Editors and reviewers must disclose relevant financial, professional, institutional, or personal conflicts of interest and must decline or be recused from cases where impartiality could reasonably be questioned. Submissions involving editorial-board members are handled by an uninvolved editor. Reviewers must preserve confidentiality and provide constructive, evidence-based evaluations.

Editorial independence: APC payments, advertising, sponsorship, and optional paid fast-track processing do not determine reviewer selection, recommendations, acceptance, or publication. Fast-track arrangements, where available, may shorten administrative or editorial handling only and do not bypass independent peer review or guarantee acceptance or publication. Digital Preservation and Archiving

Commitment to Long-Term Preservation

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya (JBS), published by Universitas Negeri Malang, is committed to preserving the integrity, authenticity, accessibility, and continuity of its scholarly record. This commitment covers published articles, bibliographic metadata, and supplementary materials where applicable.

Digital Publishing Infrastructure

JBS is hosted on the Elsevier Digital Commons Premier platform under an institutional subscription of Universitas Negeri Malang. Digital Commons provides the online infrastructure for managing, hosting, and disseminating journal content. The platform provider describes safeguards such as redundant storage and backup arrangements that support service reliability; these platform safeguards should not be interpreted as proof of enrollment in an independent preservation network.

Published Content and Persistent Identification

JBS seeks to maintain access to its published articles and associated bibliographic information, including article titles, authorship, publication dates, volumes, issues, and other relevant metadata. Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), where assigned, support persistent identification, citation, and scholarly discovery. Authors may also deposit and share articles in accordance with the journal's copyright and open-access license and author rights and repository archiving policy.

Continuity of Access and Platform Migration

In the event of a change in hosting arrangements or publishing platforms, the editorial team and Universitas Negeri Malang will seek, in coordination with the platform provider, to maintain access to previously published content and associated metadata. Where technically feasible, appropriate measures will be taken to support content transfer or restoration while preserving the scholarly record.

Independent Preservation Arrangements

Any participation in third-party digital preservation services or distributed archiving networks, such as LOCKSS, CLOCKSS, Portico, or a separately configured archival service, requires confirmation of the applicable institutional or provider arrangement. JBS does not claim participation in a specific independent preservation network unless its coverage has been verified. Confirmed arrangements will be disclosed on the journal website.

Policy Review and Responsibility

The editorial team, in coordination with Universitas Negeri Malang and the Digital Commons platform provider, will review this policy periodically in light of changes to publishing infrastructure, institutional arrangements, and digital preservation practices.
