Abstract

In arts and culture instruction, particularly the dance unit on the uniqueness of traditional dances, students of Class VIII-E at SMPN 1 Kasembon experienced difficulties that resulted in low cognitive learning mastery. The main problems were limited enthusiasm and concentration, while the previously used learning model did not sufficiently encourage active participation. This study aimed to describe the application of the Learning Starts with a Question (LSQ) model to improve cognitive learning outcomes. Classroom action research was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Lessons began with a question from the teacher, and students were asked to respond based on prior knowledge and learning experiences. They were also encouraged to formulate questions about material they had not yet understood. The results show that LSQ improved both learning outcomes and classroom engagement. Mastery increased from 34% before the intervention to 53% in Cycle I and 84% in Cycle II. LSQ thus successfully strengthened critical thinking, question-and-answer formulation skills, and active participation.
